This book is the luxury edition of Tangle Wood. The paper used in Tange Wood was already very nice, so Im very curious about the quality in this luxury edition.
I started by flipping the pages first. The firm quality reminds me of postcard paper. This is looking very well. What also comes to notice is that all the designs are in width. I think this is handy.

On the back of the design theres room for signing your work and adding a date. This allows you to always see when the design was coloured, and when there was more than one colourist in the house, its easier to see who worked on it. Its also a nice idea to write your name on the back when you would give it as a gift, so it will remind the recipient whom he got the design from.

I first coloured a design with pencils. I chose the Caran dache Pablo pencils. These pencils coloured very nice on this paper. The pigment was released very well and it attached well to the paper. Because of the good quality of the paper adapting wasnt necessary. The pigment of these pencils covered the paper well enough by itself. I think the design came out pretty well.

Next I took out the Staedler triplus fineliners and the Stabilo88, for colouring the next design. Because of the smaller boxes I chose the fineliners on purpose. These fineliners also coloured very well on this paper. The release of the colours was very good and the colours remained in place. Because of the thick paperquality the ink of both brands didnt press through.

Conclusion : The quality of the paper is of an extra good quality. It almost feels like some sort of cardboard, on which you can colour very well. Pencils as well as felt-tips colour very well on this paper. The pens didnt press through, which I wasnt worried about anyway because of the thick paperquality. This book contains 20 designs that were also in Tangled Wood, but because of the amazing paperquality and the larger size it feels like youre colouring a totally different design.

Customer Review

Jessica palmer tangle wood collector's art edition is a beautiful book with 20 drawings. These can be coloured in and either framed or given to someone as a present. This book is a lot larger than normal books you get and is made from thick card which means can use gel pens and won't go through. I got sent this from the publisher to review, I am under no obligation to leave a review but this book is so lovely I had to share it with others. I'll add some pictures of the pages and the ones i've coloured in. I've only done one at the minute but will add more when I do them. Every page is full of beautiful art work which you can colour and make your own.

I was given the opportunity to review this book by Search Press on Facebook and I'm thrilled to have had chance to see and use it.
As previously said above, the cardstock used is superb quality and the designs are utterly delightful, incredibly beautifully drawn and delightful to colour.
Each drawing is a stand alone piece of artwork and striking in black and white, let alone coloured individually.
Additionally I find the designs lend themselves as inspiration for hand embroidery and that's a double bonus!
Jessica's drawings and infill patterns are both meditative and mesmerising , infact it makes me wonder what five minutes inside her creative mind might be like!
A wonderful gift for someone or a treat for yourself : )

Customer Review

The first things you notice with this book is the thickness/weight of the card, very high quality, with a silky smooth surface and so far has taken pencil, pen and watercolour. Each page removes easily and without damage. A nice touch is the reverse where you can add a name and a date. The designs are beautiful and feature all sorts of wildlife and habitats, each intricately filled with a variety of patterns. The tone of the lines is varied from pale grey to solid black giving each illustration the illusion of being hand drawn and making individual elements of the artwork pop. Your eye naturally draws to them first and then is drawn in further by the detail. Just make sure to set aside several hours when you sit down as you will get lost in the designs.

Was very happy to review, a good size book and not fine paper to colour with ease. Beautiful detail pictures that you can just lose yourself for a break, also love the touch that you can pull out picture to frame as not design on the back.

Customer Review

A truly gorgeous adult colouring book! Jessica Palmer has produced a wonderful selection of twenty enchanting designs printed on individual leaves of thick card. The designs can be coloured in any medium due to the quality and surface of each page and the design is using one side only. Coloured or left mono each page can be saved, framed, gifted or transformed into home decor etc. Lesser colouring books are printed on inferior paper using both sides of each page, this book is artist quality. Loving the designs that are flora, animals, birds and insects....each image a delight and wonderful size. A treat for all adult colourists who appreciate beautiful design and exceptional quality combined in a truly gorgeous product.

Customer Review

This is a beautiful colouring book with 20 delicate and detailed drawings on card which makes them ideal to frame and keep. A perfect gift for someone who is really keen on art and wants to be able to frame and keep their work or give as gifts to others. I love it!

I am a beginner at colouring as an adult but what attracted me to this book was the fabulous art of Jessica Palmer whose adorable creations draw you into a magical world in which one can lose oneself completely - a book with a bunny on the front always makes me want to dive right in. Also, that bunny is decorated so beautifully with pretty mandalas that I really want to translate it into a piece of embroidery; but I digress!

The size of this book is very generous and the quality of the textured card is excellent. There is no spine so you can pull out each page to colour it which makes it much easier than in a pad format. Each page is designed to be framed if required and I like that there is a space to write your name and the date completed on the back.

So far I've just been experimenting on the back cover using my coloured pencils and I found the whole experience very absorbing as I lost myself in the contemplative nature of the craft. There's just so much to notice in each illustration as there is such a lot of detail in every image.

I won't share my newby doodlings on here as I suspect a child of 5 could probably do a better job. But adult colouring books aren't necessarily about creating a masterpiece are they; they're about taking a break from the mundane to enter a world of magic whilst freeing your creative side. So if, like me, you're new to adult colouring then I can highly recommend this book as a starting point, especially if you love animals and nature.

The original Tangle Wood, published back in 2015 and also reviewed on this site was a delightful journey through a magical wood filled with objects to find.  This is a new deluxe version that takes twenty of the original pictures and prints them larger on much thicker paper.  This has the added dimension of allowing the colorist to choose from a wider range of coloring media and being framable.

I wish more coloring books used this type of thick, off-white board-like card!  This is ideal for paints, Aquarelle pencils and even permanent markers as it is one sided and thick enough not to buckle, stay wet or shadow.  If you are a bit heavy on the water or allow the Sharpie to linger a little longer the pictures are one-sided and thus can be removed from the spine fairly easily for framing.  None of the pictures are too close to any edges for easier coloring and mounting, the book will open flat.  The line widths vary from very fine to medium but all look hand drawn with no pixellation.  Every picture is a scene with no mandalas or abstract carpet pages and none requires extra drawing.  Some of the pictures with plenty of space around them might encourage some people to do a little extra drawing but to me they all look finished and complete; just add color.  There are owls in trees, butterflies, dragonflies, hares, a hedgehog, birds, flowers and more.  You need good eyesight and lighting to color in the more intricate areas but each picture is a nice mix of the challenging and more relaxing for variety.  If like me you love large format books (8¾ x 13), thick card and the natural world with a fantasy twist this one will have a lot of appeal

Colouring in the Midst of Madness

Tangle Wood Collectors Art Edition is illustrated by Jessica Palmer and published and kindly sent to me to review by Search Press Publishing. This book is the artists edition of Jessicas hugely popular debut colouring book, Tangle Wood, which I reviewed almost 18 months ago, shes since gone on to produce two further titles, Tangle Bay and Tangle Magic. This artists edition is a different format from the original and contains 20 images, some originally single pages and others a full double-page spread, Ive included photos of all of the pages below so that you can see if your favourites are included and decide if this book is for you.

The book itself is very large, measuring 25 x 33cm (the same size as Floribunda and the JB artists editions), its paperback with covers made of the same card as the pages inside, its thick card which is a beautiful cream colour, lightly textured and perfect for use with water-based pens which dont bleed sideways or through, and pencils which layer and blend beautifully. I tested my Stabilo Point 88 Fineliners and they didnt shadow onto the back, they just seemed to glide on top instead of saturating the paper. Cream isnt everyones favourite page colour but it definitely adds a vintage feel and seems more natural than pure white so it really fits the woodland theme and also means youre left with a less harsh contrast if you decide to leave the background uncoloured. The 20 images are printed single-sided onto the card and all of them are landscape, some are single page images from the original book which are printed a little larger, and others are double-page spreads which have been shrunk to fit the new page size. The book has a lay-flat binding meaning there is no spine to contend with and that you can reach the whole image to colour it. The pages are all removable, theyre not perforated so theres no risk of them not being fully perforated and you ripping a page when trying to remove it, theyre all glued onto the spine in the same way as postcard books so theyre easy to remove if you wish but do stay put as long as youre careful and dont twist the spine too much, mine arrived pretty stiff. The removable nature of the pages is ideal for two reasons, firstly, its main purpose, which is so that they can be displayed, framed, or gifted to friends or family so your colouring is no longer destined to stay hidden away in a book; secondly, it makes it much easier to colour if you remove the page first the book is very large when fully open which makes it difficult to colour on your lap or even on a clipboard because its over A3 size when opened, but when you remove the page you can turn it to any angle you please so that you can colour each section easily without having to have your hand hanging off one corner or be rubbing over previously coloured areas and accidentally smudging bits.

In terms of mental health, this book is great, Jessicas work contains so much detail that theres constantly something to look at and notice, theres a really good mix of images from up-close plants and insects to more scenic pages and all of the chosen illustrations will look beautiful framed if you wish. The linework is fairly consistent throughout and is thin and spindly thin, the detail levels do vary because the scale of the images varies and it ranges from the tiniest of details up to much larger open spaces. While you will need pretty good vision and fine motor control, dont forget that you dont have to colour in each tiny section individually and you can get great effects from colouring over sections and using the black linework as pattern or texture through your colouring, I often do this with Jessicas illustrations and its really effective. The drawings themselves are really natural and evocative and are sure to spark your imagination as well as calm you down, Jessicas illustrations feel very peaceful so theyre great for slowing down a racing mind. A number of the images have large spaces where you could add your own backgrounds but this is by no means necessary and the pages will look beautiful with or without any additions. There is also a variance in the amount of content on each page so you can tackle a simpler page on bad days or a more complex design on days where you can focus and concentrate more fully. Fans of the original book are sure to love this edition, it feels quite different from the original but it has many more uses and is ideal for using heavy/wet media that you cant use on double-sided pages.
