Depending on the presentation, granny square projects can be charmingly retro or embarrassingly dated. The German-language title of this book was Granny Squares Postmodern, which gives crafters an idea of the authors method. While there are several traditional projects, including scarves, a skirt, and a poncho, other projects take a different approach. One of the afghans alters the construction so the motif appears as a disc on a grey background; a pillow combines a brightly colored central ring with a white background. One element that may have been lost in the books translation is the amount of yarn to complete each project. Instead, the specifications for the number of meters of yarn in a skein is given (e.g., 125 m/50 g), followed by a number of grams of yarn required. This means that crocheters need to do some simple math to figure out how much yarn is needed. VERDICT Minor quibbles with yarn specifications notwithstanding, this is a fun collection of granny square themed crochet projects, and there are a few surprises within.

We all love granny squares, particularly the way these traditional motifs are reinvented into fresh, modern designs for every generation to enjoy. This collection is split into four seasons, with patterns including a floral bracelet for spring and a cheery summer shopping bag. All the designs are given as charts rather than written-out patterns, with instructions and schematics to help create the finished object. We particularly love the Retro Miniskirt; full of seventies style!

Granny Squares are such a fun crochet item to work with. This book takes them and brings the granny square up to date. Everything from a basic granny square to more complicated

patterns are used to create and amazing array of projects. All the patterns are in chart format. This did take me out of my comfort zone but also pushed me passed my fear. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to read the chart once I understood the basics. The book includes a basic crochet course so even beginners can give the projects a go. But they may need a little help with the charts. I decided to make this beautiful bracelet in the Spring section. I love how it came out and it was a really easy pattern to follow. Little Red said it's so nice I have to save it till Easter so I can give it to myself as a present.

The first book by German designer Rosa P. contains a fantastic range of granny-square projects: phone cases, doilie wraps, pencil cases, stoles, tablecloths, ponchos, mini-skirts, scarves, warmers and throws. Even though she has reimagined the traditional granny square crochet for the present day, none of its charm or appeal has been lost. Her patterns are contemporary, current, fresh and

colourful. Shes keen to point out the importance crochet has in our hectic, modern world and its relevance to our 21st century lives. Crocheting is the new yoga, she writes in the books introduction: I like to crochet on the train, in waiting rooms its a great way to chill out. So, if its inner peace youre seeking, or some calm amid the storm of todays busy world, this could be the book for you.
