Not quite a book, but a bit more than a pattern, the Hexie Garden quilt is a 24 page boklet that comes in a handy card envelope along with nine single sided A3 pattern sheets. The author is Becky Goldsmith, who runs Piece O'Cake designs alongside Linda Jenkins, although this booklet is a solo project. The main pattern is the Hexie Garden is a stunning applique design which is ideal to make as block of the month. I was quite surprised when the author states the blocks are fun and fast as hand applique and use of hexagon layout makes them look complex to construct.There are comprehensive instructions and I like the addition of tips of themes such as auditioning fabric and being careful with bias edges. The additional pattern, Tequila Sunrise, shows a vibrant, modern way of using a single block in a quilt and so encourages the reader to think of ways the hexagon blocks can be used. If you are thinking you would like to sew applique but are not sure where to start this would be a good introduction as it features techniques such as needle-turn and fusing, and talks about templates and overlays. Hexie Garden quilt is ideal if you have been looking for an unusual design to showcase your skills, or if you want to take your first steps into applique stitching without getting overwhelmed.
